Tax Compliance That Keeps You Ahead of the Calendar — and the IRS
We help businesses, nonprofits, individuals, and agricultural clients meet their filing obligations with accuracy and confidence — so tax season stops feeling like a crisis.

What Tax Compliance Actually Involves
Most people think of tax compliance as filing a return once a year. In practice, it's an ongoing process — tracking income and expenses, understanding which forms apply to your situation, meeting federal and state deadlines, and making sure your filings reflect what the law actually requires.
At Kilgore, Brown & Brittain, we manage that process for you. We prepare and review federal and state returns, identify deductions and credits that apply to your specific situation, and flag potential issues before they become problems. Our goal is accurate, timely filings — and a clear picture of where you stand throughout the year.

- Nonprofits and churches — Form 990 preparation and state exemption filings for tax-exempt organizations
- Individuals — Federal and Alabama state returns, including clients with investment income, rental properties, or complex deduction profiles
- Agricultural clients and landowners — Farm income, timber sales, conservation easements, and the specific schedules that apply to agricultural operations
- Real estate investors and property managers — Depreciation, passive activity rules, and rental income reporting across multiple properties
- Local governments and municipalities — Compliance support as a complement to our governmental audit practice
Federal and State Filing — Handled Together
Alabama taxpayers deal with both federal and state obligations, and the two don't always move in lockstep. Deadlines, conformity rules, and available deductions can differ between the IRS and the Alabama Department of Revenue. We prepare both simultaneously, so nothing falls through the gap between them.
For clients with operations or income across multiple states, we coordinate multi-state filing requirements as well — identifying where returns are required based on your activities and applying each state's rules accordingly.

How We Approach Tax Compliance
What's the difference between tax compliance and tax planning?
Tax compliance is the work of meeting your filing obligations accurately and on time — preparing returns, applying the correct deductions, and submitting to the right jurisdictions. Tax planning is the forward-looking work of structuring your finances to reduce what you owe over time. The two are closely related, and we often identify planning opportunities while working through compliance.Do you handle Alabama state returns in addition to federal?
Yes. We prepare both federal and Alabama state returns for all client types. For clients with multi-state activity, we also coordinate filings in other states where returns are required based on your income or business operations. What if I have unfiled returns from prior years?
We can help. We work with clients to get caught up on prior-year filings and assess where things stand with any outstanding obligations. The sooner you address unfiled returns, the more options are typically available.Do you work with farms and agricultural clients on tax compliance?
Yes — agricultural tax compliance is one of our areas of focus. Farm income, timber sales, conservation easements, and the schedules specific to agricultural operations require a different level of familiarity than a standard business return. We've worked with farming and landowner clients throughout Alabama for years. Can I work with you virtually if I'm not near your office?
Yes. We serve clients across Alabama and can work with you entirely through secure document sharing and phone or video communication. Many of our clients outside Brewton work with us this way.
